MCD Grateful for Aid Received After Maria

On September 18th 2017 Hurricane Maria made a direct hit on our small island causing unprecedented damage to an already fragile economy. The Dominica Muslim Community had just recently purchased a property for the first masjid in the capital Roseau, and the community was working hard to renovate the building and prepare the facility to play an important role in the organization and spiritual development of the small community.

Purchasing the property was a significant development for our small community and the location in the capital was an important achievement as most of the members of the community live in that area.

For years the community had been patient with the modest facilities of rented, inadequate and temporary facilities.

The disaster that was hurricane Maria though could have been a blessing in disguise as it established the good qualities of patience, generosity and perseverance that distinguishes the Muslim in his personality, character and etiquette.

The communities in other areas of the Caribbean and elsewhere, especially Trinidad almost immediately reached out a helping hand and people donated food, building supplies and most of the things needed at that critical moment.

The Dominica Muslim community thanks, all of those individuals and organizations that donated, in whatever shape or form, even those who just made du’a.

As a community, the help and assistance that we received from our brothers and sisters in other islands cannot be measured in words, but we can do a simple act which is to thank those people and ask Allah, the Most Generous and Owner of all that is in the heavens and earth to reward them for their efforts in helping our community at that time of serious need and to give them all good in this life and in the hereafter.

We as a community must remember the statement of our Prophet Peace be upon him that was reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah who narrated in a Hadeeth:

He who does not thank people (for their favours) has not thanked Allaah.
Sahih Al-Bukhari
Abu Hurairah
Sunan Abu Dawood (4198)

We must become in the habit of implementing the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ in our actions until it becomes a part of our personality so that we reach the goal of becoming better Muslims based on adherence to the guidance that has come to us in the Quran and Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ.
