Our primary purpose for which we are created is to worship the One who created us.
Worship necessities submission and obedience, but it is not any ordinary submission and obedience. To submit to the one who brought you and everything else into existence is acknowledging that He is the one who truly deserves to be obeyed and worshipped as this is the least measure of gratitude that the human can respond with. If a person were asked to submit and obey another human being, the first thing that they would object to is that the person is no better than themselves and therefore they would reject this. However, submission and obedience to Allah is for the one whom there is nothing similar to and who is distinct and superior to his creation. Once a person recognizes this, he moves beyond the worship of creation to the worship of the Lord of creation thereby liberating himself from servitude and obedience to the others. That is why Allah said in relation to obedience to the leader, that it is conditional to the obedience of Allah.
Despite the fact that the leader has a high position and it is necessary to obey him for the smooth running of society, obedience to Allah and His Messenger takes precedence. Allah said:
In the original Arabic verse, the present tense of “obey” is repeated in relation to Allah and His Messenger but omitted before those in authority to show that it is conditional.
Allah has also made a covenant with the believers that if they worship Him alone and do not make partners with Him in worship that He will grant them paradise as in the following verse:
This is a great responsibility. This duty shows that we are not free to do any and everything that we feel like, but there are guidelines to follow which in turn will reap the ultimate reward.
Man has been placed on the earth generation after generation to build and develop the earth and themselves. Along with this prestigious position, man has a responsibility to be wary of the temptations of the world such as wealth and all other beautifications as well as to be wary of the temptation of women. The human being therefore has a responsibility to obey Allah which necessitates a limitation to his freedom. The Prophet Peace and Blessings be upon him said in relation to this:
In the Holy Quran Allah says:
It was narrated from Ibn Abbass that he said:
This verse teaches us that we have been entrusted with a responsibility which is to worship Allah and obey His commands. If the command of Allah is in opposition to current trends, then the Muslim takes Allah’s rule over the trend.
Alhamdulillah for benefitial knowledge jazaklaah
