Evils of Ignorance: Proofs from Qur’an

Allah in His Book, the Noble Qur’an has only dispraise for ignorance. One of the meanings ascribed to ignorance is shirk or associating partners with Allah in worship, which is the greatest of sins. Below I have quoted a few of such verses from the Noble Book.

And [recall] when Moses said to his people, ‘Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.’ They said, ‘Do you take us in ridicule?’ He said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:67)

Musa alayhi as Salaam said this because “al Jahl”, or “ignorance” is not a characteristic of the prophets and so Musa was seeking refuge in Allah from the despicable characteristic of ignorance.

He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant.

Surah Yusuf (12:33)

In this verse Allah uses the word “the ignorant” to refer to the people of ignorance bad conduct and evil. The consequence of falling into fornication is one of the signs of the people of ignorance who do not have knowledge and fear of Allah.

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant

Surah Al-A'raf (7:199)

In this verse, Allah commands the believers to turn away from the ignorant. That is because they are people who are without guidance. For such people, turning away from them is the best medicine, because they know no boundaries nor do they possess wisdom. Perhaps one of them will say something insulting or obscene causing a commotion in public that a self-respecting person would prefer to avoid.

He said, "O Noah, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was other than righteous, so ask Me not for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant.

Surah Hud (11:46)

Similarly, in the story of the Prophet Noah, Allah warned Nuh about being from the ignorant. Al Qurtubi explained this to mean “from the sinners.

And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance.

Surah Al-Ahzab (33:33)

In this verse Allah commands the Muslim women to not go out of their houses excessively and to not display their beauty in public. Furthermore, He the Exalted refers to this action as one of the signs of the days of ignorance.

And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the people of the message if you do not know.

Surah An-Nahl (16:43)

In this verse Allah commands the believers to ask the people of knowledge about thing which they need to know. The act of asking the people of knowledge is a necessary part of removing ignorance and gaining clarity and understanding about what we as believers are required to do in our lives.
